John Connolly es un filólogo nacido en Dublín en 1968. Es colaborador
del diario The Irish Times y se dedica a escribir novela negra.
Es uno de esos escritores que me gustan porque sus
personajes son recurrentes y sus lugares son comunes. Igual que Norman Mailer,
sus historias se desarrollan en Maine, EUA, y están de alguna manera,
relacionadas entre sí.
Charlie Parker, Bird,
es su detective estrella y, aun cuando sus relatos se sitúan en la época
moderna, su actitud me hace recordar vagamente a Sam Spade, el detective de la
Continental de Dashiel Hammet, prototipo del detective privado, duro de
carácter. Charlie Parker poco tiene que ver con el verdadero y maravilloso Bird, el que Julio Cortázar tan bien
describiera en El perseguidor (ver la entrada El perseguidor, en este blog, 18
de mayo de 2010).
El antagonista, llamado el
Coleccionista, es un tipo oscuro, violento y empecinado con obtener algún suvenir de las escenas de los crímenes.
Esta novela se encuentra en el borde entre lo mundano y lo
paranormal, donde un asesino de niños regresa al mundo de los vivos, del que
parece no haberse ido, en un casa llena de espejos.
Editada por Tusquets en su colección Andanzas, es una excelente
novela negra que les recomiendo.

Connolly is a Philologist born in Dublin in 1986. He´s collaborator in The
Irish Times and a black novel writer.
He is one
of those writers I do like because of his recurrent characters and his places
are usual. As Norman Mailer, his stories run along in Maine, USA and are,
somehow, related to each other.
Charlie
Parker, Bird, his main character and
even when Connolly´s stories happens in modern times, Bird´s attitude reminds
me of Sam Spade, the Continental
detective agency created by Dashiel Hammet, prototype of the P.I., hard living
one. Charlie Parker has nothing to do with real and wonder Bird, the one Julio Cortázar described so well in El Perseguidor (see the article of the
same name in this blog, May 18th, 2010).
The antagonist
named the Collector, is a dark,
violent guy, stubborn about getting objects from crime scenes.
This nouvelle
is at the edge between the real world and the paranormal one, where a child
abuser and killer returns to the living world, from where he seems not to
leave, in a house full with mirrors.
Edited in
México by Tusquets in the Andanzas collection, is a highly recommendable
nouvelle.

PD. as happens with movies titles, it´s Spanish translations is really bad. It´s original name is The reflecting eye: a Charlie Parker Novella, but in Spanish is named Beyond the mirror. For English spoken readers: we (Latinos) have a big problem with translators; they seem to believe we, the readers or the movies spectators, are unable to understand the original title of the book and they, benevolently, digest the word for us. Pity, isn´t it?
